How it works

  1. Tell us about the fence. Rough length, height, material if you know it, and your ZIP. A photo of the yard helps.
  2. A local fence company calls you back. They set a time to walk the line and measure. Ask whether the estimate is free.
  3. You get the price in writing before any post goes in. Compare it with another quote if you like. You decide.

We don't build fences and we don't set prices. The fence company pays us for the introduction; you pay us nothing.

Why fences here take a beating

A fence in Northeast Florida lives through long wet summers plus a hurricane season that runs June through November. Since 2016 alone, FEMA declarations covering Duval County followed Matthew (2016), Irma (2017), Dorian (2019), Isaias (2020), Elsa (2021), Ian (2022), Nicole (2022), Idalia (2023), Debby (2024), Helene (2024), Milton (2024).

Wind loads a solid privacy fence like a sail. Panels that let some air through, posts set deep enough, and gates hung on hardware rated for the weight all matter more here than in a dry inland town. Fences and hurricane season.

Salt air near the ocean and the Intracoastal is hard on bare steel and cheap fasteners, which is one reason aluminum and vinyl are popular from Atlantic Beach to Ponte Vedra. Aluminum fences.

A city of houses with yards

The City of Jacksonville alone holds 430,825 housing units, and 59% of them are single-family detached houses. The median home was built in 1987, and 58% of homes are owner occupied (Census ACS 2020-2024).

The suburbs are newer. In Nocatee or Oakleaf Plantation, most homes went up after 2000, which means a lot of builder-grade fences are now reaching the age when posts rot at the ground line. Older neighborhoods like Riverside have the opposite problem: tight lots and old trees, plus property lines nobody has surveyed in decades. Before the first post goes in.

Questions Jacksonville homeowners ask

How much does a fence cost in Jacksonville?

Fixr's national figures, updated January 2025, put a typical fence job at $3,000 to $7,000, about $4,500 on average, and 100 linear feet at $1,200 to $3,500 installed. Nobody publishes a Jacksonville-only average that we trust, so treat those as a starting point and get a measured quote.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Jacksonville?

It depends on where you live, because the City of Jacksonville, the three Beaches cities and the surrounding counties each run their own permits. Jacksonville Beach's permitting guide says its city code requires a permit to install or replace a fence on private property, and the application asks for a survey showing where the fence goes. Inside the City of Jacksonville, call the Building Inspection Division with your address before you build, and ask the fence company who pulls the permit.

How tall can my fence be?

The City of Jacksonville's zoning code caps fences and walls in residential districts at 8 feet. In a required front yard in a residential district, the limit is 4 feet. Neighborhood covenants can be stricter than the city.

Does a fence company in Florida need a license?

Florida has no statewide fence contractor license (section 489.105 does not list the trade), and Jacksonville's Construction Trades Qualifying Board has no fence category. So the useful checks are different: ask for a certificate of liability insurance, ask who pulls the permit, and get the price and layout in writing.

Who will come to my house?
