Vinyl fences in Jacksonville

Vinyl costs more than pine up front and then mostly leaves you alone: no paint, no stain, no rot. In a wet, salty climate that is a real trade. The question is whether the panels and posts are built for the wind you get here.

What vinyl is good at

A PVC fence does not rot, does not need paint and cleans up with a hose. That makes it popular near the water, where wood and plain steel age fast, and in neighborhoods where the HOA wants every fence to look the same for twenty years.

What to watch

  • Wall thickness. Thin vinyl panels crack in a hard hit and flex in wind. Ask what the panel and post profiles are.
  • Post reinforcement. Gate posts in particular often get a metal insert or concrete fill so the gate does not sag.
  • Color. White is the standard. Tan and gray cost more and can fade. Ask about the color line before you commit, since matching a repair later depends on it.
  • Heat. Vinyl expands in the sun. Rails need room to move, which is one reason vinyl fences go in as manufactured panels.

What it costs

Privacy vinyl sits at the top of that range, open picket at the bottom. Gates are priced on their own and vinyl gates usually cost more than wood ones because of the reinforced posts.

Vinyl and storms

A solid 6 foot vinyl privacy fence takes the same wind load as a wood one. When it fails, panels tend to pop out of the rails or posts snap at the ground. A fence company that has rebuilt fences after a storm will have opinions about post spacing and panel style; ask for them. More on fences and wind.

Questions Jacksonville homeowners ask

Is vinyl better than wood in Florida?

It lasts longer with less work, and it costs more to put in. If you plan to stay in the house a long time and hate staining, vinyl usually wins. If you want the lowest price today, wood does.

Can a vinyl fence be repaired?

Yes, usually panel by panel or post by post, as long as the same profile and color are still made. Keep the brand and color name from your quote.

Does vinyl turn yellow?

Better-made vinyl includes UV inhibitors to slow that. Ask the fence company what the panels are rated for and get any manufacturer warranty in writing.
