Aluminum fences in Jacksonville

Aluminum is the fence you see around pools and along the front of newer houses from Ponte Vedra to Fleming Island. It does not rust, it does not block the view, and wind goes straight through it. It just does not give you privacy.

Why aluminum near the coast

Steel rusts. Coated steel rusts once the coating chips. Aluminum forms its own oxide layer instead, and the powder coat on top keeps it black or bronze. On a lot that gets salt spray, like most of Atlantic Beach and Jacksonville Beach, that difference shows up within a few years.

The other reason is wind. An open picket fence presents very little surface to a storm. It is the fence least likely to come down in a hurricane, as long as the posts are set right.

Grades and gates

Aluminum fence comes in residential, commercial and industrial weights, which differ in picket and rail thickness. Residential is fine for most yards. A pool fence, or a fence that a large dog will lean on, may be worth the heavier grade. Ask what the quote assumes.

Gates are where aluminum fences go wrong. A wide gate needs a stronger post and good hinges, and a pool gate has its own rules. Florida pool barrier rules.

Front yards

An open aluminum fence is the usual front yard choice because it looks finished and stays under height limits easily. In a required front yard in a residential district, the limit is 4 feet. Jacksonville Beach uses the same 4 foot front yard limit.

Questions Jacksonville homeowners ask

Does aluminum fence rust?

Aluminum does not rust the way steel does. The powder coat can chip or fade, and fasteners can corrode if they are plain steel, so ask what the screws and hinges are made of.

Is aluminum fence strong enough for dogs?

For most dogs, yes. For a large dog that jumps or leans, ask about a heavier grade, a taller fence and closer picket spacing at the bottom.

Can I add privacy to an aluminum fence?

Not well. Slats and screens defeat the point and add wind load. If you need privacy on one side, many people mix materials: wood or vinyl along the back, aluminum along the sides and front.
